Our Air Sucks. Literally.

Our Air Sucks. Literally.

Calgary's air sucks. So does the air in Lethbridge, and Pincher Creek, Medicine Hat and everywhere in between.

Literally.

Our air actually sucks hydration right out of our skin.

It is not simply due to the lack of humidity here in the high plains desert country. Southern Alberta experiences a remarkable weather pattern, named the Chinook. We are famous for our Chinooks. They create some awesomely beautiful sunrises and sunsets. The Chinook cloud arch followed by open blue sky above our Rocky Mountains is astonishing to behold. But we pay a steep price for these Chinook weather patterns. Just as the air carried on those Chinook winds 'eats snow' (those strong dry winds!) it also sucks moisture from our skin. Ask anyone who lives in this part of the country and they are very likely to confirm that the air in Southern Alberta makes the air in Arizona, New Mexico and other desert environments feel nurturing in comparison.

Chinook winds /ʃɪˈnʊk/, or simply Chinooks, are föhn winds in the interior West of North America, where the Canadian Prairies and Great Plains meet various mountain ranges,

Chinook is claimed by popular folk-etymology to mean 'ice-eater'. First Nations legend of the Lil'wat subgroup of the St'at'imc tells of a girl named Chinook-Wind, who married Chinook Glacier, and moved to his country. She pined for her warm sea-home in the southwest, and sent a message to her people. They came to her in a vision in the form of snowflakes, and told her they were coming to get her. They came in great number and quarreled with Glacier over her, but they overwhelmed him and she went home with them in the end. A strong föhn wind can make snow one foot (30 cm) deep almost vanish in one day. The snow partly melts and partly sublimates in the dry wind.

(abridged from Wikipedia)

Living in Southern Alberta, nestled up to the Rocky Mountains. taught us some very important things about skin care. We learned that it is not enough to use a moisturizer that only provides parched skin temporary relief, because that is much like using a skin care 'band-aid' without ever actually helping the problem to be solved. We were determined to formulate Potions that not only moisturize but actually nourish and protect skin so that it becomes able to resist and conquer the effects of an extremely dry environment.

The special formulation that we make creates a barrier that protects our skin from having the moisture, literally, sucked out.

And this effect is something that all skin can benefit from, no matter where you live.

What if, instead of feeling proud of (or badly about) the way we look, we work on understanding that how we look just isn’t that important?
